Son,

I love you and hopefully things improving by the time you understand this, but I want you to know that I get this, have struggled with it, and want to talk with you about it.  All the time.

Love,

Dad

Another thought about protecting the girls in your life.

Ian,

I have said this often, and I can’t say it enough, God has made you strong and you must use that strength for His good.  Here is another example of what not to do.  Ian, men and women are different, that is just a fact.  Everyone knows that, they just don’t want to believe the truth.  Don’t let them fool you.

Ian,

I don’t write often, but your mom thought that this would be a good thing to tell you.  Last week Tim was saved by God.  In more ways than one.  My prayer is that God would save me too and that you would see that and love Him for it.

I love you,

Dad

I am sorry.

Ian,

You won’t remember this morning, but I will. I got really mad at you for just being a kid. You were getting in my way and I got mad, particularly because my way was towards sin. I saw in a small way a part of me that was disturbing. Now that I am home and with you more, I need to learn how to enjoy you for who you are. I love you and am sorry.

I Am One of Those

leave a comment »

Ian,

Let me start by saying that I don’t get this.  Not yet anyway.  I know I have some value in this world but I still think that my value is at least in part a reflection of my skills, my actions, and my abilities.  I hope one day to know otherwise, to understand that this song is really the way things are.  I hope you will also.

I am one of those, at the table not invited, and to all you at the feast it’s very plain, I cannot hide in etiquette or conversation, Christ himself sent word to me and so I came.

I am one of those who was dead and fully buried, and I still bear every stigma of decay, there is no way I can hide just what I’ve been through, ’cause when Jesus called I came fresh from the grave.

Though the world may number me among the foolish, I think Jesus Christ is all I need to know, Jesus suffered and paid blood to buy the lowest of the low, Hallelujah! Amen! That’s me! Yes, I am one of those!

I am one of those, who was a leper and contagious, the deformities and scars I have today, yet while I was vile with sickness Jesus loved me, and He healed, restored and through and through remade.

Though the world may number me among the foolish, I think Jesus Christ is all I need to know, Jesus suffered and paid blood to buy the lowest of the low, Hallelujah! Amen! That’s me! Yes, I am one of those!

I am one of those who was doomed to death in prison, and I’ve done more evil things than I could say, but Jesus broke inside and there unlocked my shackles, and to set me free, he died and took my place.

Though the world may number me among the foolish, I think Jesus Christ is all I need to know, Jesus suffered and paid blood to buy the lowest of the low, Hallelujah! Amen! That’s me! Yes, I am one of those!

I am one of those, who is hard to love and ugly, self-righteous critical religion was my stain, so I ran to Christ to wash and be discovered, Jesus came to me and covered up my shame.

Though the world may number me among the foolish, I think Jesus Christ is all I need to know, Jesus suffered and paid blood to buy the lowest of the low, Hallelujah! Amen! That’s me! Yes, I am one of those!

I love you,

Dad

Son, you are Strong!

leave a comment »

Ian,

I read this article today about a young boy who stood up to the bullies.  He fought back against huge odds.  The end of his story isn’t written, but I want to encourage you in it.  I want you to know you are strong.  You have been gifted by God with a strength both of this world and beyond it.  I want you to know you have the most powerful thing behind you.  Know that.  Live in that.

Practically, my prayer is that if you were to come across a scene like this boy experienced, you wouldn’t be one of the “adults” that stood by and watched.  My prayer is that you would use your strength for good.  Use it to protect.

I love you.

Because you are strong!

Ian my boy,

Your mom told you something yesterday and I wanted to get it on paper.  You had just pushed Aidan down and she came up to you and told you, “We use our strength for good.”

Ian, you are strong, you will be very strong.  I can see it already.  Son, I want you to know that your strength is a gift from God and He has given it to you to glorify Himself.  As I have said before, my hope is that you will know that and be a protector.  Protect those that can’t protect themselves.

I love you and can’t wait to see what God has in store.

Love, Dad
